Christmas in Cornwall

Updated: Dec 30, 2023

As the holiday season approaches, there's a special charm that blankets the picturesque county of Cornwall in the southwestern part of England. Known for its stunning coastline, quaint villages, and rich cultural heritage, Cornwall offers a unique and enchanting setting to celebrate Christmas. If you are renting a cottage for the holidays they usually come full dressed for the occasion with Christmas trees and locally made wreaths.

Coastal Christmas Vibes

Imagine strolling along the rugged coastline, with waves crashing against the cliffs, while the air carries a hint of salt and the festive scent of mulled wine. Cornwall's coastline, dotted with charming towns like Looe, Polperro, and Fowey, come alive during the Christmas season. The streets adorned with twinkling lights, the shops showcasing local crafts and artisanal gifts, create an inviting atmosphere that warms the heart even in the chilly winter air.

Magical Markets and Festive Feasts

One of the highlights of Christmas in Cornwall is the abundance of festive markets and events. From the Fowey Christmas Market to the Padstow Christmas Festival, these events are a treasure trove of handmade crafts, local delicacies, and mulled cider that evoke the true spirit of the season. Visitors can indulge in shopping for unique gifts while enjoying live music, street performances, and the delightful aroma of freshly baked mince pies.

Moreover, Cornwall is renowned for its culinary delights. Christmas in this region means savoring traditional Cornish pasties, indulging in cream teas by a cozy fireplace, and relishing sumptuous Christmas dinners featuring locally sourced produce – a true gastronomic delight!

Traditional Festivities and Unique Customs

Cornwall boasts a rich heritage, and its Christmas traditions are steeped in history. The county embraces its Celtic roots with unique customs such as the 'Tom Bawcock's Eve' celebration in Mousehole, where a lantern-lit procession honors the legend of a fisherman who saved the village from famine.

Along the stunning coastline of Cornwall, a unique tradition unfolds on Boxing Day and New Year's Day—the invigorating 'dip' into the icy sea. It's a sight to behold as locals and visitors alike shed their inhibitions along with their winter layers, donning their bathing suits, and eagerly dashing into the sea. This refreshing ritual serves as a spirited way to shake off the indulgences of the festive season, and I'm among those who enthusiastically take part in this exhilarating tradition. The collective laughter and shared camaraderie create a memorable experience, uniting us in a moment of invigoration and celebration.

Immersive Winter Activities

For those seeking a bit of adventure amidst the festive cheer, Cornwall offers an array of winter activities. Embrace the crisp winter air with a brisk walk along the South West Coast Path, pick up a pasty from Sarah's pasty shop in Looe and walk along to Talland bay and eat it on the beach before continuing along to Polperro and grabbing a well deserved pint in the Blue Peter inn one of the oldest pubs in the area. The quieter beaches during winter create a serene backdrop for reflection and tranquility. If you are feeling like a surf is more your style then head over to the north cost for a lesson, they have plenty of hire shops where you can book a lesson.

Christmas in Cornwall isn't just a holiday; it's an immersive experience that combines breathtaking landscapes, rich heritage, mouthwatering cuisine, and heartwarming traditions. Whether you're seeking a peaceful retreat or a lively celebration, Cornwall's unique blend of coastal beauty and festive spirit makes it an ideal destination to create lasting memories during the most wonderful time of the year.

Plan your escape to Cornwall this Christmas and discover the magic of the season in this enchanting corner of England.
